Flashing PRNDS or gear display on a DSG: what it means
When the PRNDS gear letters or the D flash on a DSG, the gearbox control unit has stored a fault. See the common causes and what to do right now.
A flashing gear display on a DSG is the car's way of saying the gearbox control unit has stored a fault. It may also show a warning message. It is not a diagnosis. It could be a loose connector, or it could be a failing mechatronic unit.
What you see
Depending on the model:
- The whole PRNDS row blinks
- The selected gear letter or number flashes
- A gearbox warning appears with a text message
- The gear display goes blank
What to do right now
- Pull over safely if the car loses drive or behaves oddly.
- Switch off, wait a minute and restart. Sometimes a brief fault clears. If the display flashes again, there is a stored fault.
- Do not keep driving hard. If the car moves normally, drive gently to a safe place or workshop. If it jerks, loses gears or drive, stop.
- Do not clear and ignore. Get the codes read first. See how to read DSG fault codes.
Common causes
| Cause | Typical clue |
|---|---|
| Mechatronic pressure fault | Harsh shifts or limp mode with it. See DQ200 mechatronic |
| Communication loss | Display goes blank, sometimes with other lights. See U0101 |
| Low battery voltage | Faults after short trips, slow cranking |
| Clutch or adaptation problem | Judder, slipping |
| Sensor or solenoid fault | Intermittent, different gears affected |
| Connector or wiring fault | Fault appears after bumps or rain |
Which codes to look for
The hydraulic group, P17BF, P189C and P0841, points at the mechatronic on a DQ200. A communication code points at power or wiring.
Is it safe to drive?
It depends on how the car behaves.
- Drives normally with the display flashing: a short, careful drive to a workshop is usually possible.
- Harsh shifts, missing gears or limp mode: do not carry on. See limp mode.
- Burning smell or slipping: stop.
If the car must be moved, recovery on a flatbed is the safe choice.
What it will cost
There is no single figure, because the causes range from a battery to a repair. Cheap causes are a battery, a connector or a software update. Costly ones are the mechatronic unit and the clutch. The repair cost guide lays out the ranges.
Mistakes people make
- Disconnecting the battery to reset it. It does not fix a real fault, and it can lose adaptation values.
- Ignoring it because it stops after a restart. Intermittent faults usually get worse.
- Buying a mechatronic unit without a diagnosis. A loose plug costs much less.
FAQ
Why is only the D flashing?
The display flashes the selected gear or mode when a fault is stored. It is the same fault family as the full row.
Will the warning clear by itself?
A stored fault may stop flashing after several clean drives. It is still stored.
Does a flashing display always mean limp mode?
No. Limp mode is one possible result. See DSG limp mode.
