P0841 DSG fault code: pressure sensor signal explained

P0841 (17225) means the gearbox pressure sensor reading does not match what the control unit expects. See causes, symptoms and the usual repair.

P0841 is a transmission fluid pressure sensor code. On the DQ200 it is listed by workshops as the pressure sensor reporting a signal that is not plausible. Older VAG tools show the same fault as 17225.

What it means

The control unit compares the pressure it reads with the pressure it expects to see. When the two disagree, it sets P0841. The fault does not tell you whether the sensor is wrong or the pressure itself is wrong.

The two possible stories

The sensor is reading wrongly. The pressure is fine, but the sensor signal is off. This would be a sensor or circuit problem inside the mechatronic.

The pressure really is wrong. The sensor reports it correctly, and the hydraulics are not delivering what the control unit asks for. This is the more common reading when the code arrives together with P17BF and P189C.

Symptoms

  • Jolting or delayed gear changes
  • Gears that will not engage
  • Limp mode
  • Slipping or loss of drive under load
  • Warnings on the dash

Why you should look at the group of codes

P0841 on its own can be an isolated event. In a group with other pressure codes it tells a clearer story. Listing and recording them, as set out in how to read DSG fault codes, saves time at the workshop.

What to check

  1. Voltage. A weak battery can distort sensor readings.
  2. Oil level and condition on wet-clutch boxes. The code is not limited to the DQ200. On a DQ250 or DQ381, old or low oil is worth ruling out. See the oil interval guide.
  3. Live data. If the diagnostic tool shows the pressure reading, compare it with the expected range.
  4. Connectors and wiring.

Repair

Workshops that specialise in the DQ200 usually repair or replace the mechatronic unit when P0841 comes with the other pressure codes. They advise against replacing the whole gearbox. See mechatronic repair or replacement and the DQ200 mechatronic guide.

FAQ

Is P0841 always a DSG code?

No. It is a generic fluid pressure sensor code, so it also appears on other automatic gearboxes. This page covers it on VAG DSG gearboxes.

Does 17225 mean the same thing?

Yes. 17225 is the VAG five-digit version of P0841.

Can I clear it and see if it returns?

You can, once you have recorded all codes. If it returns, treat it as real.
