DSG warning messages on the dash and what to do about each
Gearbox warnings on a VW group dash range from advisory to stop now. See how to read the wording, what the colour means and what to do in each case.
The wording of a gearbox warning tells you how urgent it is. Exact texts differ by model, year and language, so use this page as a guide to the pattern. Your handbook has the list for your car.
Read the colour first
On most cars the warning light colour sets the urgency:
| Colour | General meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow or amber | A fault is stored, or a limit is active | Drive carefully to a workshop and have it read |
| Red | A serious fault or overheating | Stop safely and switch off, follow the handbook |
The same wording can appear in either colour. Treat red as more urgent.
Common types of message
Gearbox malfunction, you can continue driving. A fault is stored and the gearbox may be limiting itself. It often comes with a flashing gear display. See flashing display.
Gearbox malfunction, stop vehicle. The control unit considers it unsafe to carry on. Stop, switch off and seek advice. Recovery on a flatbed is the safe choice.
Gearbox overheating. Heat from slow driving, hill holding, towing or hard use. Stop in a safe place, select N or P as the handbook advises, and let it cool. If it returns, the cause needs checking. See limp mode.
Gearbox: shift to P or N. Some cars ask you to select a position before leaving or restarting. This is usually a procedure message, not a fault.
Selector lever or gear not engaged. A lever or position fault. It can be a sensor, a connector or a cable on some models.
What to do each time
- Note the exact message. Take a photo of the dash.
- Note when it appeared. Cold, hot, after rain, after a bump.
- Restart once if the car is safe to do so. A brief fault may clear, but the code stays stored.
- Have the codes read with a tool that reads the gearbox module. See how to read DSG fault codes.
- Do not clear and ignore. The warning returns when the cause is still there.
When to stop driving
- The car loses drive or has only some gears
- A red warning is shown
- You smell burning oil or hot clutch
- The car jerks badly
In those cases, stop and arrange recovery. Long drives in limp mode can add clutch damage to a mechatronic fault.
Warnings that are not the gearbox
A gearbox message can come from low battery voltage or a network fault. If other lights appear with it, check the battery first. See U0101.
FAQ
Can I drive with a yellow gearbox warning?
Usually for a short way, carefully, if the car drives normally. Have it read soon.
Will the message go away by itself?
It may after several clean drives, but the fault is still stored.
What does the handbook say?
It lists the messages for your model and year. That list overrides any general guide.
