Towing a trailer with a DSG car: what to check first

Towing loads a DSG's clutches and oil more than normal driving. See how to check the rated towing weight, which gearboxes cope best and how to adjust servicing.

A trailer adds weight and heat. A DSG can tow within the manufacturer's rating, but towing changes how you should drive and service the car.

Start with the rating

Check the car's rated towing weight in the handbook or on the registration documents. The rating depends on engine, gearbox and drive type. Do not assume a model's headline figure applies to your version. If the rating is low or the car is not rated to tow, do not tow.

Why towing is harder on a DSG

  • More load at pull-away. The clutch has to take up the weight of the car and the trailer.
  • More heat. Slow hill climbs and repeated starts heat the clutches and the oil.
  • Longer time under load. Long climbs keep the gearbox hot for extended periods.

Dry-clutch gearboxes have less cooling than wet-clutch ones. Many small dry-clutch DSG cars have a modest or no towing rating for that reason. See dry and wet clutch DSG compared.

Which gearboxes suit towing

In general terms, wet-clutch gearboxes cope better because the oil carries heat away. Higher-torque units, such as the DQ500, are designed for heavier use, though they still run hot if pushed. See DQ500 common problems. Check the rating for your exact car, not the gearbox family.

Driving a DSG with a trailer

  • Pull away without slipping the clutch for long. Use a decisive but smooth start rather than inching.
  • Do not hold on a slope with the throttle. Use the brake or handbrake.
  • Let the car manage the gears. On long hills, manual mode can keep it in a sensible gear. Avoid lugging at very low revs.
  • Watch the temperature warnings. If an overheating message appears, stop in a safe place and let the gearbox cool. See warning messages.
  • Reverse slowly. Reversing with a trailer on an incline asks a lot of the clutch.

Servicing for a towing car

Towing is a standard reason to service a wet-clutch gearbox earlier than the manufacturer's maximum. The oil and filter cost little compared with clutch damage. See DSG oil change intervals. Tell the workshop that the car tows, so that it can advise on the interval.

Signs of strain

  • Judder when pulling away with a load. See judder
  • Slipping or revs rising without matching speed
  • Burning smell after a climb
  • Warnings or limp mode

If any of these appears, stop towing until the car is checked.

FAQ

Can any DSG car tow?

No. It depends on the rating for your exact car. Some are not approved for towing at all.

Does towing void the warranty?

Towing within the rating normally does not. Check the warranty terms and the handbook.

Should I fit a gearbox cooler?

Some owners do on heavily used cars. Ask a specialist who has experience with your gearbox.
