Dual mass flywheel or DSG clutch: how to tell which is failing
Both a worn dual mass flywheel and a worn DSG clutch cause shudder on pull-away. See the differences in symptoms and how to tell which part needs replacing.
Two different parts cause the most confusing symptom on diesel DSG cars: a shudder when pulling away. One is the dual mass flywheel, a part of the engine side. The other is the DSG clutch, a part of the gearbox side. They can feel identical from the driver's seat, and they cost different amounts to replace.
What each part does
Dual mass flywheel. It sits between the engine and the gearbox. It has two masses linked by springs that smooth out the engine's firing pulses. When the springs and bearings wear, the smoothing fails.
DSG clutch. The gearbox's twin clutches take up the drive when the car moves off and during gear changes. When they wear or when their learned values drift, they judder or slip.
How they differ
| Sign | Flywheel more likely | Clutch more likely |
|---|---|---|
| Rattle at idle in neutral | Yes | No |
| Rattle changes when you press the clutch or select a gear | Sometimes | Sometimes |
| Judder only on pull-away | Possible | Possible |
| Slipping or flaring revs under load | No | Yes |
| Harsh engagement with codes | No | Yes |
| Vibration at low revs under load | Yes | Less often |
The overlap is large. A symptom alone rarely settles it.
Which cars are affected?
The flywheel complaint is most often discussed on diesels, where the engine delivers strong pulses at low revs. Petrol DSG cars suffer less. See DQ250 problems for the diesel context.
How a workshop separates them
- Read the codes and the live data. Clutch slip values and adaptation figures show if the clutch is out of range.
- Listen at idle. Use a stethoscope or a recording. A flywheel rattle is often audible at idle and disappears at higher revs.
- Check the clutch adaptation. If it adapts into range and the judder stops, the clutch is likely fine.
- Inspect the flywheel when the gearbox is out, if the symptoms justify the work.
Why it matters
Replacing the clutch on a car whose flywheel is the fault does not cure it. Replacing a flywheel on a car whose clutch is the fault does not either. Either mistake costs a gearbox removal. Because both parts sit behind the gearbox, many workshops advise replacing the flywheel and clutch together once the gearbox is out and the flywheel is already suspect. Ask for a written reason either way.
What to try first
Do the cheap things in the judder guide: software, adaptation and oil. If the car rattles at idle and shudders on pull-away on a diesel, mention the flywheel at the start.
What it costs
Both repairs need the gearbox removed, which is where most of the labour goes. That is why replacing both parts together is often cheaper than doing them one after the other. See clutch replacement costs.
FAQ
Can I drive with a failing dual mass flywheel?
For a while, yes. Over time, a failing flywheel can damage the clutch and the gearbox input shaft, so do not leave it indefinitely.
Do petrol DSGs have a dual mass flywheel?
Many do. Complaints are less common than on diesels.
Is the flywheel covered by a DSG warranty?
It depends on the warranty terms. Ask.
